WHAT DO YOU THINK |
] |
kind of early, but I'm busy tommorrow. MERRY NEW YEARS, one and all. 2006 was a good year, and I think 2007 will also be. Please indulge me, as I talk about music. Not all of these albums are from 2006, but whatev
The Decemberists - Crane Wife
A new direction for the decemberists, leaving the theatricality of Picaresque behind, to an extent. The stories told here are based off preexisting stories, like the Shankill Butchers, or the old Japanese story of the Crane Wife. The tracks to look out for are Yankee Bayonette (I Will be Home Then), and song that worms its way into your subconscious about a soldier dying far away from home, or The Island, a retelling of The Tempest in sweet rock. All songs on this album are good, or rather amazing
Assemblage 23 - Failure
Not normally a fan of Electronica, but this record may convince me. Assemblage 23 is a one-man band, and this album was his way of dealing with his fathers suicide. As a result the songs are dark, but with a message. I Am the Rain is a song to pay attention to, as well as Disappoint. It may convert you to new styles of music, as it did me.
Beirut - Gulag Orkester
If an American lad decided he wanted to do Romanian folk songs he might come up with a record remakably similar to this one. A heavy Eastern European influence flows throughout the album in a completely non-pretentious way. Not to be missed, this kid is going to be big someday, or now even. Look for Postcards from Italy, or Prenzlauerberg.
Lansing-Dreiden - The Dividing Island
Post-Rock from the most reclusive of bands. Slightly psychadelic, but all awesome. Out of Florida I think, but don't let that set you off. Rock in awesome form, with lyrics that make little sense, and the most amazing names for songs. Look for Dethroning the Optimyth, or Metal On A Gun.
Theres more, but this post is already kind of long. And rationally thinking, no-one reading this will check out any of these bands, but this post was for me. Hope all of y'all have a good new years.

LESSONS FROM BUS RIDIN'
1.) "You headin' to Mexico?" Guess my latin-ness isn't as stealthy as previously thought
3.) Utah is a wasteland.
4.) Idaho's 'Famous Potatoes' license plate is sad in a pathetic sort of way.
5.) Don't trust combination liquor-tobacco-coffee-fast food stores, especially in Butte.
7.) Truck truck truck truck goose.
9.) In Butte, 'uptown' and 'downtown' are literal, as the whole thing is on a hill.
10.) Nevada is a wasteland. But not as much as Utah.
11.) I should've bought the bible self-testing booklet from that truckstop. Now I'll never know how many lashes are appropriate to punish a man for theft. Unless I read the Bible I guess. So yeah, basically never.
12.) The US is really frickin' big.
14.) Are words really poison darts of pleasure?
15.) Utah? wasteland.
17.) Deeth Starr Valley? Wait, what?
18.) California is prettier.
Anyways.
John: You know, now that you're in washington, your gonna have to start actually writing in your journal. That was a threat
Erik: You enjoy Picaresque? Or rephrased, you enjoy Picaresque.
Mackenzie: You still need The Arcade Fire?
Thea: You want to go to Minipop the 31st? Don't know if you got message. Also; Decemberists.
Jason: I don't think you actually read LJ.
Beta: Does Beta like music? As in going to musical concerts.

Interim comments
From : Middle of Nevada
Thesis : I hate this car.
Well, it seems this car isn't exactly 'functioning' per se. Which, you might say, is the exact reason we are stuck here in a goddamn RV park in Nevada. Nevada! What's this state known for? Gambling and whores? And tiny-ass little towns that don't carry parts that you need so your car won't break down. It's a wonderful thing.
So I get up at some ungodly hour this morning so we can push most of the way to Wyoming, but then we learn that the alternator is shot. My parents have already spent insane amount of money to fix this car up, so this is even more of an insult. To top that off, out of the 7 or so garages in this town, none carry the part we need. So were stuck, at least until tommorrrow. In nevada.
But thats unavoidable. This car doesn't exactly work, you know, well. Why couldn't my parents have a normal midlife crisis and buy a dinky little sports car? At least I could enjoy the use of it.
And everyone is still going to be goine when i get back.
Meh. Done venting for now. I still hate Nevada, though.
Update: This is a town of about 1000 people. There are three casinos and two brothels here. in short, exactly what I expected out of Nevada.

Precious - Minipop |
] |
Tegan & Sara were the awesome. Good opening bands too. Unlike some others I could name cough cough feist cough cough.
Minipop was especially awesome, not to say Communique wasn't. Communique wasn't...exactly what I expected though. A bit more agressive, if you will.
Music that is coming up that everyone should see. Or not. Really up to you.
August 31 - Minipop (w/seventeen evergreen + Pine*AM) - 9pm, $7 September 11 - The Decemberists - 8pm? - $20 September 19th - The Arcade Fire September 21/22 - Bloc Party (Which I can't go to due to school. Stupid school.)
PS the Erik - Dead Can Dance are playing at the Paramount 9/21-22 as well. In case you didn't know.
Now I hope to regain the hearing. Please let me know about other shows that I did not put up.

I was watching the local news just a minute ago (i was bored, you see) and there was a segment in the news about a shooting that lad to a death in berkeley yesterday. These segments aren't exactlt uncommon, as murders aren't exceptionally rare in the bay area, until I heard the name.
Meleia Willis-Starbuck.
The name sounded familiar. I wasn't exactly sure why. I realized that I used to go to school with her for two years, as well as being in the same drama camp one summer. It's not like I've thought about her at all these last six years, and now she's dead. We weren't close, but this is still really odd.
People I know shouldn't get killed.
It's wrong.

In general, I am not one to try to push my beliefs on other people. But here, I am willing to make an exception.
If you are a fan of science fiction or fantasy or books, or even just things that are awesome, at all in any way, you have to read China Miéville.
Any of his stuff, really. But especially Perdido Street Station.
I would engage in more hyperbole, but the books speak for themselves.
So read them.

The attack is present everywhere here. Newspapers, news, talk on the street. But life is the same, more or less. People are doing the same things as always, and while there might be a few less people on the Tube than normal, life goes on. I always thought the british 'stiff upper lip' thing was just another stereotype, but I guess there is some truth to it.
The tournament is in full swing now, on the second day out of three. Twelve hours straight of Magic. To each their own, I guess. Two of the people I'm with got knocked out of the actual tournament on day one, but it looks like my brother is doind okay right now.
For Antonio, what this basically means is that I have a helluva lot of time on me own. Which normally would be a good thing. I actually had a whole semi-list of things to do, but 7/7 kind of screwed that over, with the Picadilly and District lines not going into central London, I have no way of getting where I want to be, unless I wanted to pay for a Taxi. Which would be crazy expensive.
I feel a little off the the most the attacks did to me is affect my shopping, but life goes on, I suppose. Simply the fact that is the worst I can complain about is a good thing, even if it feels a bit off doing it.
Probably leaving London on Sunday night, or Monday morning. Hopefully monday, considering my group will probably be at the tournament until late. Right now, it's a toss up between Scotland and Wales. Thinking that maybe i should start looking for hostels and bus times, but that would violate the procrastinators code, and that would be unforgivable.
Actually managed to sign up for may classes over here, and i'm damn excited for it. Lookes like I'm going to be taking two history classes (the world before 1500, and introduction to greek myth) and one writing (writing across the arts, my core class) as well as sabre.

This...this is really odd.
I was out yesterday in the morning to get breakfast. I walked the the Earls Court station, which is right by the hostel we're staying at. The hostel was being evacuated due to 'a reported emergency' at the liverpool station. Nobody really knows whats going on, but most are a little annoyed at the delay. At the store, I hear the radio on, but there isn't a lot of information. I hear everything from a power surge knocking out tube service to a full blown attack. Obviously, the answer was both.
Today, the tube is back in operation. People are going back to work, but there are conflicting reports as to what to do. We're hearing both that we should not be cowed, and go out to out normal lives, and that we should not go out, and stay in today.
I don't know. This is really...odd...for me. I'm not particularily scared. I'm obviously worried for the people cought in the blasts. I want to do something, but I don't know what.
Every time I go to Europe....jesus.
